When it comes to buying a house, it would be nice if you Canadians treated us Brits the same in sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ as we treat you in Great Britain.
My wife and I are here in Victoria on a two-year work visa, but are unable to buy a home to live in due to the punitive 20 per cent foreign buyers’ tax introduced in May.
A Canadian or any other national working or living in Great Britain can buy a house anywhere within the United Kingdom, London included, and pay the same transfer taxes as a British national. That residence is then free from capital gains tax on sale provided it has been used solely by the owner to live in until the sale date.
You use the English language and the Union flag on your provincial flag. You also have the Queen on your currency. How would you feel if Brits tried to tax you for that privilege?
