Re: 鈥淰ictoria council mulls mid-block crosswalk on Blanshard,鈥 Feb. 28.
Once again, I read of a member of Victoria city council sticking a finger in the taxpayer鈥檚 eye with a large budget request for a problem that I do not believe exists. This time it鈥檚 a half-million-dollar crosswalk on a major traffic route in the city.
I do not recall stories of death and mayhem as people jaywalk there. Crosswalks here or there do not solve jaywalking. Witness Cook Street, with about four new lighted crosswalks, yet pedestrians continue to cross where they will. Similarly in the 900聽block of Pandora Avenue.
If this is about a war on cars, then state that. But please do so without continually spending money on problems that do not exist. Note the underfunded bus-pass idea for school kids.
And when you finish that, get out and fix the potholes and thank Police Chief Del Manak for your safety.
