Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps states that ride-sharing will provide another transportation option that is safe and flexible. This is said to align with the city鈥檚 priorities.

As if it has any. For decades, the cab companies have asked for more taxi stands to unload passengers 鈥 particularly wheelchair customers 鈥 in the core. This was refused because the city did not want to give up parking revenue.

The companies basically gave up asking for the privilege of picking up fares beside fire hydrants, as in other cities. After decades the city suddenly granted the request and officials congratulated themselves for coming up with some extra parking.

Competition from ride-sharing will mean that cab companies will have to mothball a percentage of their cabs. It is doubtful if the public will notice any difference in wait times.

If Helps were serious about more transportation options, she would let cabs share bus lanes as they do in Ottawa. With most of the cabs being hybrid or electric, this would also push her carbon agenda.

I鈥檓 not holding my breath.
