As I walk in North Saanich or along the ocean in many spots in Victoria, I often wonder about the lifeless homes. Are people on holiday? Are they recluses? Are they out for groceries?
I suspect, though, they are the second homes of people who live elsewhere. They stand as empty reminders of how neighbourhood souls can be gutted by people who own for reasons other than rental or residence. When people don鈥檛 fill the houses they own with some sort of family, it really can cause a lifelessness for our communities.
If this speculation tax can force folks to fill those empty homes, I think our problems with housing shortages and art-gallery-quiet neighbourhoods could be replaced with lived-in and enjoyed homes, adding to our sense of community.
We can all benefit from that. And yes, I know it can add to problems, but so can all choices we make. It鈥檚 about weighing consequences and choosing the option that benefits the most in the world, I hope can be encouraged by such a tax.
