Councillor created ‘enduring awareness’

Any person who dedicates in earnest a quarter-century of her life to public service deserves a very broad thank-you from us all.

Democracy has spoken and must be respected, but Coun. Pam Madoff need not worry; her legacy will live on and with solid, enduring value. Madoff, along with others — in particular, former heritage planner Steve Barber — created “mutual responsibilities” and “an enduring awareness” of the need to cherish and preserve the heritage buildings in our city. Citizens and developers will and do continue to respect and preserve whenever humanly possible.

The record is not perfect, but over my decades in the city — from the late Sam Bawlf to the late Michael Williams and such responsible heritage preservationists as Richard Holmes — we have been in the hands of generous and well-meaning custodians. I assure you, they have not just been there for the almighty buck.

So, with a new chapter going forward, let’s trust in this awareness and that it will be carried forward with appropriate diligence by those now governing our city into the future.

In the meantime, Pam — well done and thank you.
