Re: "Rare chairs a gift from heaven for poor church," Aug. 30.
For several reasons, I was delighted to read the article about the discovery of two Ming dynasty chairs at St. Matthias Church.
That this church, which was nearly decimated when all the hardliners left it, had these beautiful and important chairs just sitting there; that among the remaining congregation was an expert capable of seeing what they were; and that this can be seen as a particularly lovely example of divine justice, though whether St. Matthias owes it to the solicitude of the Christian God is anyone's guess. I rather think the Jade Emperor had something to do with it.
