Re: 鈥淚sland reels after wicked storm,鈥 Dec. 22.

A bit of adversity often brings out the best in society, and our family has reason to be grateful on two counts. The sa国际传媒 Hydro crews, taking time from their own holidays, did a fantastic job restoring power in our area after the Dec. 20 storm. They rewired a truly daunting tangle on the roads leading into Chemainus.

We鈥檙e amazed they could get things up and running as quickly as they did. We know some people are still in the dark and cold, and hope they鈥檙e hooked up to the grid soon, but I think sa国际传媒 Hydro鈥檚 crews and management deserve high praise for their response.

We also had a medical emergency in our household. The response of Chemainus Fire and Rescue, sa国际传媒 Ambulance Service, and the doctors and nurses at Cowichan District Hospital was, again, professional and caring.

There are many places in the world where the kinds of assistance we received are simply not available, or are only available to those who can pay. In sa国际传媒 and sa国际传媒, we receive these kinds of responses as a right, and often take them for granted until they are tested by some kind of disaster. This isn鈥檛 the first time our family has been grateful for the kinds of services available to us, but it鈥檚 certainly one of the most dramatic demonstrations of the benefits of living where we do.

Nothing like a real emergency to test the integrity and strength of our first responders and ourselves.
