Re: 鈥淐ourts and inept leaders are failing us,鈥 comment, Oct. 14.
I was still reeling after reading the warnings from the report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change on the immediate dangers of our warming planet and how we have 10 to 12 years to reduce our CO2 emissions by 45 per cent of 2010 levels to keep the Earth from catastrophic global warming, when I noticed that the sa国际传媒 Islander had a half-page opinion piece devoted to the promotion of increased fossil-fuel development.
Curious about who could be so deaf to the impending global environmental crisis that threatens human survival on the planet, I researched the author, Gwyn Morgan, and found he has been (among other things) CEO of Encana, a giant gas and oil corporation.
It seems corporate profits with business as usual in the oilpatch influence his reasoning. Perhaps he has not noticed that the laws of physics and chemistry govern the climate; warming caused by human use of fossil fuels is perilously close to making the Earth uninhabitable for humans. We have a small window in which to act, 10 to 12 years.
Morgan鈥檚 suggestion that sa国际传媒 hurry up and increase fossil-fuel production is reckless.
