I find the writer's complaint rather strange.

Is he saying that we should only be able to comment on the problems of the area in which we are trained? That a carpenter should only have an opinion on events to do with carpentry? That none of us should be allowed to express an opinion outside our own realm of learning?

The writer is immediately breaking his own rule, unless, of course, he is trained and is an expert in the field of oil production and pipeline building. Even if that were true, would he still not be breaking his own rule by giving his opinions of the clergy?

What the writer is really attacking is the precious right of free speech, which is the very core of democracy. And he should be exceedingly glad that we live in a country that has it.
