When I was new to Fernwood, the first time I sent international students, aged 19 and 30 (yes, 30) out trick-or-treating so they could experience the cultural phenomenon of Halloween, I nervously accompanied them in case they got snarled at for being past middle school.

My Fernwood neighbours were thrilled to see them, and loaded them up.

My young teen daughter gets the same response. She wants to still participate in what is basically a community festival of art and theatre. She and her friends commit to the creative costuming piece, and Fernwood embraces them with no grumbles about age.

Thank you, Fernwood, for understanding that Halloween is not about age — it’s about community spirit.
