Re: 鈥淧M apologizes for 1939 refusal of Jewish refugees,鈥 Nov. 8.
Our prime minister recently made an apology on behalf of the Canadian government for rejecting a ship of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany in 1939. This follows similar apologies for other callous injustices, including the turning back of the immigrants from India in 1914 on the Komogatu Maru, the head tax on Chinese immigrants and the appalling treatment of First Nations children in residential schools.
Is it not time, though, to address current issues head on, where we could make a difference, however small?聽
I鈥檓 thinking of the current massacre and starvation of the people of Yemen by an interventionist coalition of reactionary states lead by Saudi Arabia and backed solidly by the U.S. and Israel. sa国际传媒 has made feeble protests while, in the meantime, selling billions worth of military equipment to the Saudis.
Why not act now and cut off sales of arms to the Saudis? Or will a government, 80 years hence, be shedding vain tears and apologies for the people of Yemen we could have helped?
