Re: 鈥淲rong decision on Fairfield church,鈥 letter, March 20.
When I read the article about the demolition of Fairfield United Church, I wondered how long it would be before there were letters to the editor lamenting the loss of this grand old historic building.
There are many fine examples of historic buildings that have been 鈥減reserved鈥 by keeping the facade but rebuilding the rest: the Bank of Montreal building at Portage and Main in Winnipeg, and the Woodward鈥檚 building in Vancouver to name but two.
There are also many buildings in Christchurch, New Zealand, which, after the earthquake, have kept the iconic portion of the building connecting to a new building.
Residents fondly touch the cornerstone of the building, and tourists snap pictures of the quaint streets and beautiful entrances. Nobody laments the disappearance of century-old plumbing and wiring.
