May 11: Douglas was first black public official

Re: 鈥淣ew plaque recognizes early black sa国际传媒 pioneer,鈥� May 5. Mifflin Wistar Gibbs was not the 鈥渢he first black person to hold public office in British Columbia.鈥� He was the first black person to hold elected public office here.

Mifflin Wistar Gibbs was not the 鈥渢he first black person to hold public office in British Columbia.鈥� He was the first black person to hold elected public office here. Sir James Douglas was the first black person to hold public office, and a high one it was.

Douglas was appointed governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island in 1851. In 1858, he also became the first governor of the Colony of British Columbia.
