Mifflin Wistar Gibbs was not the 鈥渢he first black person to hold public office in British Columbia.鈥 He was the first black person to hold elected public office here. Sir James Douglas was the first black person to hold public office, and a high one it was.
Douglas was appointed governor of the Colony of Vancouver Island in 1851. In 1858, he also became the first governor of the Colony of British Columbia.
