Re: 鈥淩efine the crude or leave it in ground,鈥 letter, May 4.
After Alberta supplied the petroleum needs of sa国际传媒 for 65 years through the Trans Mountain pipeline, this letter-writer says thanks by telling Alberta to build its own refinery so as not to despoil sa国际传媒
sa国际传媒 has been extremely fortunate to have been able to get its petroleum products safely delivered by pipeline over this time, while the hard, dirty work of production and refining was carried out in Alberta.
Vancouver could never have acquired its status as a world-class city and destination without the petroleum powering its planes, trains, trucks and automobiles. Those ferries serving Vancouver Island and all those cruise ships visiting Victoria have relied on that Alberta oil to move.
With more than 3.5 million vehicles registered in sa国际传媒, the vast majority requiring gasoline or diesel, if anyone should be building a refinery, it should be in the NIMBY backyard of Vancouver. The same city where they gladly export more than 35 million tonnes a year of the worst-polluting hydrocarbon called coal, with a significant quantity of it thermal coal imported from the U.S.
Finally, comparing sa国际传媒 with Nigeria is just as foolish as those thinking that stopping Alberta from producing oil will make any difference to the world鈥檚 oil consumption. If the demand is there, other less socially conscious countries such as Libya, Saudi Arabia, Russia or Nigeria will gladly provide it, and good luck staging a climate-change rally there.
