Mayors let us down over Elsner

Victoria鈥檚 and Esquimalt鈥檚 mayors have just told us they do not want to be responsible for their actions. When I worked as a manager in business, I聽was responsible for my actions.

Those actions included hiring, evaluating, rewarding, disciplining and firing employees. I could not claim it was a conflict of interest if I聽had to discipline someone 鈥 the business wanted employees with the right skills and I was an agent for the business.

Our mayors are (or should be) in a similar position. Our cities want appropriate employees in all positions and one of the mayor鈥檚 responsibilities (I hope) is to ensure that is the case 鈥 directly for people they hire and for others the mayor has to ensure appropriate procedures are in place.

In the Frank Elsner situation, both mayors let us down. They did not ensure a hired employee was performing their duties.
