Re: 鈥淥nce-vital skills are becoming obsolete,鈥 column, Dec. 16.
I thoroughly enjoyed Monique Keiran鈥檚 column on disappearing skills once taken for granted. I have a few to add.
Can young people still tell time using a clock face or can they use only digital clocks? Will the expression 鈥渢he ticking second hand鈥 become obsolete?
We also have spell-check. Where will the incentive to look up a word in the dictionary go? It鈥檚 already ancient history.
Reading the column reminded me of an old story a friend told me about his son who was visiting a friend. He needed to call home to ask permission to stay for dinner. The son was given a rotary telephone and was unable to operate it. Another once-vital skill gone.
