Re: 鈥淰eteran councillor was the 鈥榗onscience鈥 of city鈥檚 heritage,鈥 Oct. 23.
Losing Pam Madoff from city council is a huge blow to anyone concerned about the city鈥檚 heritage. I think one of the reasons Madoff came up short at the polls is that some of her staunchest supporters are the business owners renting in buildings she has had a hand in protecting, but most of these business owners get no vote.
For almost 50 years, I have leased spaces in downtown Victoria and spend between three and 18 hours in the city daily, yet I get no vote. Why?
Arguably, what goes on at city hall affects business owners more than residents and resident owners, as businesses pay three times more in tax, yet get no vote. It doesn鈥檛 seem fair.
Still, it surprises me that the people of Victoria who did get to vote did not recognize or appreciate the unique role Madoff played on council. Who will now stand up for Victoria鈥檚 heritage?
