Re: 鈥淔or the region, recycling can be a pain in the glass,鈥 Jan. 3.
It鈥檚 obvious from the article on glass-container disposal that the whole Capital Regional District recycling program needs an overhaul and the sa国际传媒 government must do more to manage it effectively.
When you have the CRD about to recommend that you not use glass containers, while the anti-plastic鈥檈rs actively promote glass as an eco-friendly storage alternative, you are bound to have confusion in your curbside recycling box. Especially if it鈥檚 a different set of rules for apartment dwellers, where apparently glass is not accepted now, and for different municipalities, as well.
Here in Sooke, roadside collection accepts glass, but not plastic overwrap, which is the bulk of our recycling; recyclers here charge $10 a bag or $40 a month for us to dispose of it, a deterrent for sure for many who simply can no longer afford to recycle.
If you don鈥檛 want to see the landfill full of things that will never degrade, someone has to get serious about finding a local use for crushed glass 鈥 and all plastic overwrap should be able to be recycled everywhere for free.
