Quite apart from the relative merits of the alternative systems (and there are arguments to be made on both sides), there is a huge reason not to introduce proportional representation at this time, namely, the increasing arrogance of the still-marginal Green Party.

The practical result of introducing such a system would be to establish the Green Party as 鈥渒ing-maker鈥 for the foreseeable future, which would be an extraordinarily undemocratic outcome.

One also suspects that the inadequate parameters on which the referendum is based (50 per cent plus one, along with no floor in respect of voter turnout) was done to accommodate their wishes, which is yet another reason to vote a resounding 鈥渘o.鈥
