Re: 鈥淲hy can鈥檛 we all just get along?鈥 column, Sept. 15.
I was amused at Les Leyne鈥檚 smoothness and subtlety in his Saturday column. His smoothness and subtlety (slipperiness?) were exemplified in his assertion that: 鈥淧eople will be deciding on the polarizing issue of proportional representation, by way of a rigged vote that discounts rural sa国际传媒鈥
I wonder what he would have said back in 2005 and 2009 when the referendums on proportional representation were deliberately set up to fail by the then-sa国际传媒 Liberal government.
Everyone in British Columbia will be able to vote, no matter where in the province they live. The three options presented in part two of the ballot ensure representation from rural areas.
The fact that the mixed-member proportional version will base its top-up seats on a regional pool of candidates tells me that the regions will be amply represented.
I think that proportional representation will allow for smaller parties with new ideas to be represented in the legislature, and therefore there will be greater choice for the voter, as opposed to the current stranglehold that two major parties have on sa国际传媒 politics.
