Re: 鈥 Tragically flawed Afghanistan remembrance,鈥 opinion, Nov. 16
I wholeheartedly agree with the writer that true remembrance and honouring of the sacrifices made by veterans should include an honest review of the necessity of horrendous experiences we put them through. There is little discussion of the lessons learned. There are parades and speeches, and soon after that we move on to justification of bigger budgets for war machines in the name of defending freedom and the good guys.
Had we participated in Vietnam and Iraq wars, there would be two more memorials for Canadian soldiers and hundreds, if not thousands, more families shattered for ever.
Have we forgotten weapons of mass destruction, collateral damage and other terms?
What did we achieve in Afghanistan? For that matter, what did the Russians and the British achieve before that?
Wars are insane and suffering caused on both sides can not be justified. We all need to do better.
