Ten or 15 years from now, a similar headline will likely appear in the sa国际传媒. Except the location of this future cleanup will be Shawnigan Lake, and the cost will be double, at least.
That is the headline our provincial government in teeing up. Despite the cancellation of the notorious South Island Aggregates contaminated soil site after a damning judgment by Justice Robert Sewell, the province appears to be preparing to leave the contaminated soil in place, in a quarry above Shawnigan Lake, enclosed in a leaky liner.
To make matters worse, the province has not required a security bond for closure from the site owner, thus ensuring the ultimate cleanup costs will be borne entirely by the public.
