Michel Murray argues that bike lanes are an inefficient use of the roadway because they are busy only during rush hours, and they have little effect on improving our environment.

By the same argument, many sidewalks are also an inefficient use of the roadway. Some sidewalks are busy only when kids are walking to and from school. Even worse, kids hardly use these sidewalks at all during school vacations. It would be more efficient (and speed up car journeys) if these sidewalks were replaced by additional road lanes. This would also encourage more parents to drive their children to school. After all, encouraging kids to walk to school and reducing the number of car journeys is going to have little effect on improving our environment.

Sidewalks are just another pricey vanity project.
