Jaskirat Singh Sidhu is to be commended 鈥 not for running that stop sign and causing the crash that devastated the Humboldt Broncos, but for accepting his responsibility.
That, as he and countless other drivers who have caused crashes know, is his real punishment 鈥 one that will follow him all his life.
The courts can only add a 鈥渨ork of supererogation鈥 to that in any sentence they impose 鈥 nothing they can do will pay that debt to society, except the rest of a life lived in the full knowledge and recollection of it.
We scream about road safety 鈥 but we are not willing to accept, I think, that the real responsibility lies in each one of us at the wheel of our car or truck, on our bike, or walking along and across our streets.
I am responsible for what I do, when driving. If not, I have absolutely no business being on our roads as any sort of driver, no matter how physically skilled.
Until all of us accept this as our way of life, our roads, no matter how much is spent on safety, cannot be made safe.
