Take time to learn about candidates

I decided to take the concerns expressed in the above commentary in the Islander to my candidates. I had already been to an all-candidates鈥 meeting but still didn鈥檛 have a lot of clarity on who I wanted to vote for. So I went online and soon found a website that listed the email addresses for all the candidates.

I asked each of them for a response to the article. So far, I have received emails from eight candidates. I am learning a lot about who is really open to dialogue, who is already engaged in collaborative processes to find solutions to problems and who is still talking in generalities.

I鈥檓 looking for community leaders who can gather people with good ideas and solve problems. I don鈥檛 want to know about zero carbon in 2050. I want to know what we are doing today, this year, a five-year plan. I want to know that my council respects everyone鈥檚 input and can work together to implement the best ideas.

If we want the best council possible, we have to ask questions until we know who walks their talk and who is relying on campaign literature and signs. Time is short. Ask. Ask. Ask.
