Re: 鈥淩omance scams, CRA calls, top fraud list across sa国际传媒,鈥 March 5.

I was well aware of the fake sa国际传媒 Revenue Agency calls that try to frighten seniors into sending money.

I was very cautious, then, when I picked up the phone to answer a call and saw 鈥淐RA鈥 on my call display. I have often read that CRA never calls.

The caller gave me a 1-800 number to call him back, when I聽indicated some concern about the call.

I phoned back and I am glad I聽did. It was a staff member of the Disability Tax Credit department.

I told him I didn鈥檛 receive the credit. He said that was what he was calling about.

It seems that when the general returns are reviewed by the relevant staff, if the medical expenses exceed a certain percentage of the individual鈥檚 income, the return is automatically sent to the Disability Tax Credit section for review.

He offered to send a form for my physicians to complete, with regard to my claimed costs. It arrived soon after.

We discussed the questions, and my family doctor considered for a week or two and consulted with others.

I sent it back. Two weeks later, I received three letters, one for each of three years. About a week later, I received a cheque for the full amount deemed to be owing to me.

I was most grateful to learn that CRA had a process that would reach out to people who might otherwise remain ignorant of their possible eligibility for an important tax credit.
