As an affluent traveller from the States, I took great umbrage at the uppity rantings of Trevor Hancock.

While I鈥檓 enjoying the luxury of the Fairmont Empress, eating at Victoria鈥檚 great restaurants, kayaking the great harbour and appreciating the great geography of Victoria, I am spending my capitalist earnings in supporting Christopher the bell captain of the Empress, Paul of the wonderful wait staff at the Empress, Brandon the naturalist kayak guide and the person who parked my car at the Butchart Gardens.

Without people like me, Victoria would not have the tourism dollars necessary to provide employment to its people. While Hancock wrote a good column, I want to tell him you鈥檙e capable of eating your cake and enjoying it, too. Long live capitalism and down with socialism.
