U.S. helped destroy our British traditions

We moved here in 1992 from Calgary. During our time there, my husband was transferred to Perth, Australia, to work. We all enjoyed our time there very much.

On thinking about this, we discovered that the best thing about living there was that there was no U.S.A. next to us. We were free to enjoy the British traditions without someone trashing them.

Since our background is British, it was wonderful to enjoy actors and entertainers from Britain whom we never get here. As well, they had more British stores (e.g. Marks & Spencer, which used to be here) and I had a greengrocer and his truck at my door weekly.

Do people realize that we used to drive on the left until the early 1920s? Obviously, we couldn鈥檛 keep it up with so many more Americans nearby.

If the letter-writer is so keen on the Americans, who also discarded every British tradition they could think of 鈥 even the ones from which they could benefit 鈥 I suggest he move there and leave those of us who enjoy the few British traditions that they haven鈥檛 destroyed in peace.
