This electoral-reform referendum reminds me of a previous vote that was based on grand visions and ideology but had no sensible plans on how to implement it: Brexit.
As with Brexit, a huge amount of money is being spent by the parties that stand to benefit to convince us that voting yes will lead us to some utopian political future. However, there is no concrete plan on how to implement any of the three PR options — two are purely theoretical. MLAs have no idea if their riding is rural or semi-rural, which affects how individual constituents can vote or if they will even retain their own seats.
These decisions that affect how we as British Columbians vote will require consensus from the legislature in the case of a yes vote, the same legislature that is trying to move the LNG decision without a vote for fear of the government falling. There is no plan.
Voting yes will lead to a Brexit-style mess of everyone trying to grab their share of power as people realize they were hoodwinked into voting for grand dreams without anything solid underneath. I’m voting no on the referendum.
