Re: 鈥淲hy sa国际传媒 voters rejected electoral reform,鈥 Dec. 22.
Proportional representation will be considered by the electorate only if it is understandable, concise and an option they see as improving things.
The referendum question failed on all counts.
The NDP has shown no real appetite for this change, as the Green Party is the only current party that would gain. Attorney General David Eby鈥檚 muddled proposals, tardy explanations and failure to consult more widely, such as a citizens鈥 assembly, deep-sixed PR from the start.
As well, rarely was it pointed out that this was a trial run that could be overturned. So now we are fixed with a system that reinforces a majority of the seats being garnered with a much smaller percentage of the votes 鈥 and the turnout will continue to wither. As Winston Churchill said, democracy is the worst form of government except for all the others that have been tried.
