We need a system with new values

In my view, the column by Trevor Hancock pointing out the long-term adverse effects of the values embodied by overconsumption was very well thought out and had tremendous merit. So I was disgusted and appalled by this letter. The writer seems to think the world revolves around him because he has found some way to be successful in the capitalistic system and there are people to serve him. It is a short-sighted and selfish view of things.

While creating some tourist jobs for our city might be fine, the reason tourists come to Victoria is the natural beauty and the gardens. Destruction of the planet鈥檚 natural systems by overconsumption championed in capitalism is not a long-term sustainable scenario.

There is undeniable evidence of the effects of climate change caused by greed and overconsumption. There is tremendous need for adequate provision for poor masses on the planet and not unbridled consumption by some self-glorified people such as the writer and U.S. President Donald Trump.

A system based on new values would create lots of jobs and we might also be able to attract the right kind of tourists to our beautiful city.
