The Islander provided plenty of news space to the proportional representation debate. But the coverage was long on opinion and short on facts.
One reason for this is that much of the PR system won鈥檛 be decided until after one of three models becomes operational. This leaves too much of our democracy out of the hands of voters.
In addition, there is the hidden fact that the vote on PR itself uses a preferential-ballot system. Why isn鈥檛 preferential balloting one of the options?
If preferential voting is the method used to determine whether we want PR or first-past-the-post, why isn鈥檛 it good enough as a way to vote on political candidates?
