My wife and I recently returned from a two-month visit to Mexico. To use my cellphone in Mexico, my local Canadian provider wanted to charge us $12 per day plus taxes.
Instead, when we reached Mexico, we went to the local Telcel office in search of an alternative. For $5 Cdn, they sold us a Mexican SIM card. For another $14, they gave us a plan that gave us 2聽GB of data and unlimited calling throughout Mexico, sa国际传媒 and the U.S. for one month. At the end of that month we returned to the store and paid another $14 for the second month. We decided to spend an additional five days and were allowed to add those days for an additional $4.
Total price for two months (and five days) of excellent cellphone service, reception and data: $37聽Cdn. Savings from not using my local Victoria provider: $683. Yet at these ridiculously reasonable cellphone rates, the owner of Telcel, Carlos Slim, is the fifth wealthiest person in the world.
To make matters worse, our local provider raised our rates while we were away.
Did you ever get the feeling that sa国际传媒鈥檚 cellphone industry is taking advantage of us?
