Re: 鈥淏ack up green talk by giving up parking passes, councillor tells colleagues,鈥 Dec. 18.
Once again, Geoff Young shows as one of the few sane voices on Victoria council. Council has been hypocritical in waging war on cars in Victoria, yet councillors retain free parking privileges for themselves. They should experience the same difficulties caused by their actions as the rest of the travelling public.
The height of hypocrisy, as usual, comes from Ben Isitt, who complains of rash motions from the floor, yet this council and its predecessor seem to function only by rash motions that complain of Christmas, their entitlement to the public trough and everything but the good governance of this city for all its people.
Drug possession is condoned, yet there are stiff penalties for a shopkeeper handing out a plastic bag for the convenience of customers. Money is available for pet projects of members of council, yet there is insufficient for basic city services. There is no money for desperately needed downtown parking, but there is for the unused bike lanes.
It is to be expected there will be differences of opinion in municipal politics, however well-intentioned, but some on this council place personal ideologies over the needs of the city.
