Abassi to become part owner of Clippers

The sa国际传媒 Hockey League's Nanaimo Clippers appear to be adding Hadi Abassi to their ownership group. The club has called a news conference for Friday morning for an announcement regarding the current ownership group.

Abassi is the president of Atlas Group, which owns the Nanaimo Timbermen clubs in the Western Lacrosse Association and the sa国际传媒 Junior A Lacrosse Association, as well as the Vancouver Island Raiders of the sa国际传媒 Football Conference.

When reached for comment Wednesday, Abassi issued a "no comment."

If the rumour is true, Abassi will join a five-man ownership group that includes team governor Ken Wagner, Bill Gallacher, CBC Hockey Night in sa国际传媒 analyst and former NHL goalie Kelly Hrudey, Paul Colborne and David Moir. Hrudey, Colborne and Moir came on board in February 2011.

Wagner and Hrudey did not return phone messages Wednesday, but both are slated to be at the news conference on Friday.

The Clippers are currently tied for second pace in the Island Division at 14-9-0-2 with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs (13-10-0-4), two points behind the Victoria Grizzlies (15-7-0-2).
