It was the difference between men and boys as the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½-champion Burnaby Bulldogs defeated the Victoria HarbourCats 11-4 in a non-league exhibition baseball game Sunday afternoon at Wilson’s Group Stadium at Royal Athletic Park.

The Bulldogs are a senior amateur team that will represent the province at the Canadian championship next month. The three-time sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½-champion Bulldogs won the 2017 Canadian title when the national tournament was held in Victoria.

The HarbourCats are a younger team of collegians who play in the West Coast League.

The Bulldogs starter on the mound was Alex Webb, a graduate of the UBC Thunderbirds, who was selected in the ninth round of the 2016 MLB draft by the Cincinnati Reds. Web played two seasons of Single-A ball in the Reds’ minor-pro system before becoming a free agent.

Webb got out the first eight HarbourCats batters before Griffin Paxton was able to solve him with a single in the third inning.

Garrett Goodall made his first start of the season for the HarbourCats and went scoreless through the first three innings.

Burnaby blew the game open with a Matt Reyes three-run homer in the sixth inning that bounced off the scoreboard to make it 6-2 lead. The Bulldogs outhit the HarbourCats 15-7.

It’s back to WCL action tonight at Royal Athletic Park for Victoria as they begin a three-game set against the Cowlitz Black Bears of Washington state.

The HarbourCats, who have a WCL playoff berth sewn up as North Division first-half champions, are 10-5 in the second half and 28-14 overall. The Black Bears were 9-5 in the second half and 19-22 overall heading into Monday night’s home game against the Walla Wall Sweets.
