Alberni golfer among qualifiers for Bayview Place Island Savings Open

The Greenville, South Carolina, native made good on his first crack at Monday qualifying, recording a 6-under 66 at Gorge Vale Golf Club, one shot shy of Spencer Fletcher鈥檚 sizzling 65 to earn berths to the Bayview Place Island Savings Open presented by the sa国际传媒.

Out in the fourth group of the day, Reeves recorded four birdies and an eagle on a comfortable stroll around the Esquimalt course. Fletcher, of Los Altos, California, posted his round in the afternoon.

It鈥檚 Reeves鈥 first venture north of the 49th parallel as the 24-year-old Clemson University product missed out on last week鈥檚 opening tour event at Point Grey, remaining at home for a tournament and then travelling to the Island.

鈥淚鈥檝e never been up in this part of the world before,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a nice start to the week.鈥

Reeves, who graduated in 2013, has played several mini tours in the U.S. and also qualified for four Web.com Tour events, but has never made the cut on that tour.

A total of 10 players qualified Monday from a field of 136.

Among the successful candidates was Greg Palmer of Port Alberni, a 22-year-old who spent four years at the University of New Orleans, who was in a group of seven players tied at 4-under 68.

鈥淚 made a lot of clutch putts down the stretch,鈥 said Palmer, who came home in 32, including three straight birdies on Nos. 13, 14 and 15.

Preston Valder of Yorba Linda, California, shot 67 and Zack Kempa of Brantford, Ont.; Chris DeForest of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; Bryce Ledford of Ooltewah, Tennessee; Jacob Vanderpas of Vancouver; and Andrew Vijarro of Bend, Oregon; and Devin Carrey of Langley all shot 68s along with Palmer.
