Amira Giannattasio went out in grand style Saturday night in her final sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ West regular-season women’s basketball game for the University of Victoria Vikes.

Her 44 points, in an 87-58 victory over the MacEwan Griffins of Edmonton, tied her own record for the most points in a game in franchise history.

It is the fourth-highest scoring game in conference history and matched Giannattasio’s 44 points from earlier this season against the UBC Thunderbirds, which eclipsed the former Vikes record of 42 scored by UVic legend and two-time Olympian Carol Turney-Loos in 1978 against the Saskatchewan Huskies.

The only better performances in sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ West history were Calgary Dino Meagan Koch’s 49 points in 1996, Koch’s 45 points in 1995, and former SFU Clan star and two-time Olympian Teresa Kleindienst’s 45 in 2002.

Paige Thomson had four points in her final regular-season game in a Vikes jersey.

Giannattasio will finish her career No. 3 on the Vikes women’s hoops all-time scoring list with 1,539 career points. She surpassed Luanne Hebb (1,530) on Saturday and is behind only Turney-Loos (1,646) and former Belmont star Lisa Koop (1,660).

Meanwhile, Vikes men’s starters Jordan Charles, Mason Loewen and Jake Newman closed out their Vikes regular-season careers with an 84-60 victory over the Griffins in CARSA Gym. Charles and Loewen scored 18 points each, guard Scott Kellum 17 and Newman six.

The UVic men will finish 10-10 in sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ West and are headed to the playoffs, while the Griffins’ season is over at 1-19.
