Another day, another move up the overall standings for Ryder Hesjedal.

The Victoria pro cyclist advanced two positions to 14th in the 2016 Giro d’Italia following Tuesday’s 10th stage.

Hesjedal lost touch with the lead group in the medium-mountainous 216-kilometre stage, from Campi Bisenzio to Sestola, but gamely fought back to place 25th at the summit finish.

“I felt pretty good in such a long, hard stage with tough climbs,” said Hesjedal, in a statement.

“I managed to more or less stay with the favourites. I had great support from the guys [Trek Segafredo teammates] before the second-to-last climb and then hung in there enough to get back to the front [group] on the descent.”

Italian Giulio Ciccone of the Bardiani CSF team won the stage in 5:44:32 with Hesjedal 2:26 behind.

“I struggled a bit on the last part of the Category 1 climb, which was steep,” said Hesjedal, the 2012 Giro champion, fifth last year and ninth in 2014.

“I just stuck with my rhythm and was able to manage to get back. The last climb was a bit easier. In the big picture, it was a good day,” added the Belmont Secondary-graduate and a three-time Olympian for saʴý.

Hesjedal is 3:39 behind overall leader and pink-jersey wearing Bob Jungels from Luxembourg and the Etixx-Quick Step pro team. The Colwood-raised veteran has recently moved from 29th to 22nd to 16th and now 14th overall.

Today’s 11th stage, 212 kilometres from Modena to Asolo, is another categorized as medium-mountain.

The 21-stage, 3,383-kilometre 2016 Giro concludes May 29 in Turin.
