Nick Guiney continued his hot streak Sunday afternoon at The Q Centre but the rest of the Victoria Grizzlies couldn’t get anything going against the visiting Vernon Vipers, dropping a 4-1 decision and leaving them at the bottom of the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Hockey League’s Island Division.

After a scoreless first period in front of 923 fans at The Q, Guiney opened the scoring with his team-leading fourth goal of the season early in the second period when he banged home a rebound from a Brayden Gelsinger shot. And it looked like the Grizzlies would head to the intermission with the lead but with 40 seconds left in the middle frame, Mac Ferner slid one under Matthew Galadja’s pad to draw the Vipers even.

And in the third, the Vipers took advantage of a Grizzlies team missing three defencemen — Brett Sterling, Jake Stevens and Grayson Pears — due to injury. Vernon got goals from Riley Brandt and Liam Finlay midway through the final period and then add a short-handed empty-net goal from Bo Pellah to put the game away.

Vernon goaltender Andrew Shortridge made 30 saves for the victory, while Galadja stopped 29 Vipers’ shots.

The Vipers improved to 4-5-0-1 on the season, while the Grizzlies lost their third game in a row to fall to 1-6-0-1.

Next up for Victoria is a home game on Thursday night when the Alberni Valley Bulldogs pay a visit to The Q Centre.
