It is the most famous kids’ sporting event in North America, if not the world.
Beacon Hill is one step closer to the iconic Little League World Series, which annually attracts crowds of up to 40,000 in Williamsport, Pa., while garnering television coverage on ABC/ESPN.
That’s pretty heady stuff for any 11- or 12-year-old.
Beacon Hill defeated Layritz 5-3 in the District 7 championship game Sunday afternoon at Hampton Park.
Beacon Hill cruised through the tournament, undefeated at 6-0, to defend its title from 2012.
Annual power Layritz was 4-2, while Lakehill and Hampton/National were 1-4 each and Central Saanich 1-3.
Beacon Hill, managed by Dave Clark and Tak Niketas, will now play for the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ Little League championships, which begin Saturday in Kerrisdale.
The sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ champion will advance to play in the Canadian championships, Aug. 2-11, in Glace Bay, N.S., with the national champion representing sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ at the 67th Little League World Series, Aug. 15-25 in Williamsport.
sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ teams have been dominant in representing sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ in Williamsport, having done so 21 times — including Esquimalt-Vic West in 1974 and Gordon Head in 1999 with current Seattle Mariners major-leaguer Michael Saunders.
The sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ champion has advanced to Williamsport every year since 2005.
No Canadian team has won the Little League World Series.
Meanwhile, the sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ 9-10 Little League championsips continue this week at Layritz Park, with the championship final on Saturday.
