Beacon Hill exits early at Little League provincials

The dream of becoming the third Island team to make it to South Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the Little League World Series is over for Beacon Hill. The District 7 champions were defeated 12-2 Friday by New Westminster at the sa国际传媒 Little League championships in North Vancouver and are now winless in five games and eliminated from playoff-round contention.

Beacon Hill closes out today against Kerrisdale (1-4).

鈥淲e had higher hopes but the kids gave full value,鈥 said Beacon Hill manager and co-coach Thor Wishart.

鈥淚t was a learning experience for them about how to compete at this level.鈥

That will come in handy next year when Beacon Hill hosts the 2017 sa国际传媒 Little League championship at Hollywood Park with five returning players.

鈥淲e are very excited to be bringing this tournament to our park next year,鈥 said Wishart.

Whalley was the lone undefeated team after Thursday鈥檚 play at 5-0. Round-robin play ends today with the playoff round Saturday. The provincial champion advances to the Canadian championship, hosted this year by sa国际传媒 at PNE Hastings Park. The Canadian champion advances to the Little League World Series, the 2016 edition which runs Aug. 18-28 in South Williamsport.

Teams from sa国际传媒 have represented sa国际传媒 in Williamsport 24 times, including White Rock/South Surrey last year. Also in that total are Esquimalt-Vic West from 1974 and Gordon Head from 1999, the latter with a team that included current Toronto Blue Jays left-fielder Michael Saunders. sa国际传媒 teams have won the Canadian championship every year since 2005 except for 2013 when East Nepean from Ottawa was the national champion. No Canadian team has won the Little League World Series.
