The Cowichan Valley Capitals have a new hockey boss and they didn鈥檛 have to go far to find him.
Bob Beatty has resigned as GM and head coach of the Capitals after four seasons at the helm of the sa国际传媒 Hockey League team. And the Capitals announced Thursday that replacing him in both positions will be former pro hockey player Brian Passmore. The 37-year-old Passmore spent the past two seasons as head coach of the bantam prep team at Shawnigan Lake School.
Prior to his tenure at Shawnigan Lake, Passmore spent several seasons as head coach in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League, including stints with the Peninsula Panthers (2012-14) and the Westshore Wolves (2014-15).
Passmore, from Mississauga, Ont., was selected in the seventh round of the 2000 NHL draft by the Minnesota Wild and played more than 300 pro games in the ECHL and Europe.
The Capitals also announced assistant GM Darren Rodney will have an expanded role, being named the team鈥檚 director of hockey operations. In this capacity, Rodney will work with Passmore on matters regarding player personnel.
The Capitals open the 2017-18 BCHL season on Sept. 9 when the Nanaimo Clippers visit the Island Savings Centre.
