Keep that up and Belmont Secondary might want to change its school moniker from Bulldogs to Bombers.
The Westshore school dropped some heavy artillery on the Oak Bay Bays in an impressive 71-54 win in the Island triple-A challenge game to earn the second provincial berth on Tuesday night at Oak Bay.
The Bulldogs join the Island champion Claremont Spartans at the sa国际传媒 championship beginning March 12 at the Langley Events Centre.
Daniel Massy was stroking three-pointers in the warmup and it just spilled over to the first quarter as the Belmont senior canned three of them in the opening frame. Then Kane Johnston got hot, pumping in back-to-back long-distance bombs in building up a 21-8 lead.
鈥淚 got hot in the first and I just kept feeling it through the game,鈥� said Massy, who finished with six three-pointers for 18 points.
鈥淲e couldn鈥檛 ask for more. Coming into this game, we were nervous, we got up and stayed up and we were good. In their gym, in front of their fans, it feels unreal.鈥�
The Bays didn鈥檛 have an answer for big man Erik Spaven as he had 10 points midway through the second quarter for a 30-15 advantage that was cut to 37-25 at the half as the hosts made a bit of a run.
Oak Bay 鈥� who amazingly never led in the home game 鈥� did trim it to 49-48 with just under six minutes to go, but Massy canned another three to end a 7-0 Bays鈥� run.
鈥淚t鈥檚 fitting because last year, what got us through was Massy,鈥� said Bulldogs coach Kevin Brown, recalling an upset over Mount Douglas at Islands in which Massy came through. 鈥淎s a Grade 11, he came off the bench, missed a few, we calmed him down and he made about six.鈥�
Just like Tuesday night.
鈥淗e did this last year,鈥� said Bays coach Chris Franklin. 鈥淭his isn鈥檛 his first time. He seems to have risen when the moment needed it and he did it again. Good for him.鈥�
The Bulldogs now go on to face South Kamloops in their first game at sa国际传媒鈥檚 a week from tonight at 8:15 p.m. Claremont faces St. George鈥檚 at 1:15 p.m. the same day.
Liam Horne and Mat Hampton finished with 15 points each for Oak Bay. Owen Vaags finished with 11 for Belmont.
