Brad Gushue capped a successful week, bouncing back from a Brier runner-up finish to claim the top prize at the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling’s Elite 10 event on Sunday afternoon at The Centre in Colwood.
The Newfoundland and Labrador skip squeaked by Manitoba’s Reid Carruthers in a draw to the button in an extra end to claim the Elite 10 trophy and the $20,000 top prize in the $100,000 competition.
It was Gushue’s second slam title of the season and seventh overall win for the World Curling Tour’s money leader. It was his team’s fourth final in five slam events in the 2015-16 season.
Gushue also defeated Carruthers and his rink of third Braeden Moskowy, second Derek Samagalski and lead Colin Hodgson in another extra-end draw to the button in the Elite 10 round-robin back on Day 1 of the event on Thursday.
Both teams had advanced to the championship in similarly exciting fashion in the extra end match-play format late night Saturday. Gushue eliminated Saskatchewan’s Steve Laycock by fractions of an inch, sitting within 2.3 inches of the centre pin to 2.8 inches for Laycock.
Carruthers, who earned $12,000 here, edged out Brier champion Kevin Koe, who defeated Gushue last week for the national title in Ottawa.
In Sunday’s final, Carruthers’ draw to the button attempt was heavy and ended up in the back eight-foot of the rings. Gushue calmly stepped into the hack and delivered his stone which grabbed a piece of the button for the win.
Gushue then saluted the appreciative crowd.
