The No. 1-ranked double-A senior boy鈥檚 basketball team in the province did not disappoint its fans as Brentwood College toppled the Lambrick Park Lions 84-59 in the Island championship game at the Mill Bay school on Saturday night.
Both teams now advance to provincials March 8-11 in Langley. It鈥檚 the first trip to sa国际传媒s in four years for Brentwood College and the third ever Island crown for coach Blake Gage鈥檚 crew.
鈥淎ll we talked about was trying to get better and being the best team we can at the end of the year, and giving ourselves a chance to go as deep as we can,鈥 Gage said of his team鈥檚 goals this season.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been a good year. We have a lot of Grade 11s on our team, so it took a little bit of time to figure out the senior game. But our guys have worked really hard. I think we really improved a lot over the year and I think that鈥檚 a testament to their work ethic.鈥
The St. Michaels University School Blue Jags also came up with the win they required to advance to provincials, defeating Shawnigan Lake 72-32 to grab the bronze medals and secure the third and final berth to sa国际传媒s.
Coach Ian Hyde-Lay鈥檚 Jags defeated Parkland 73-44 earlier in the day.
In the quadruple-A final, the favoured Oak Bay Bays defeated the host Belmont Bulldogs 83-64 to claim their third straight Island championship.
Cowichan dumped Dover Bay 77-39 to finish third and will now be able to challenge Belmont for the second berth to provincials, since the two teams did not meet in the Island tournament. That game takes place Tuesday at the Dog Pound.
At the triple-A Islands at Vic High, the Cinderella season came to an end for the host Totems who lost 62-34 to Mark Isfeld in the morning and could not get through to one of the final four positions to advance to Langley.
It鈥檚 an all-North appearance there as Nanaimo District defeated Wellington 79-43 in the championship game. Mark Isfeld knocked off Carihi 65-44 in the third-place game, but all four advance to provincials.
