The No. 5-ranked Oak Bay Breakers ran into the brick wall known as the No. 1 Brookswood Bobcats, dropping a 76-43 decision to the two-time defending provincial triple-A senior girls’ basketball champions on Friday night in Langley.
Oak Bay — which finished third both last season and in 2013, and claimed silver in the championship final loss to the same Bobcats in 2014 — will play for bronze at 11:30 a.m. today against No. 3-seed Lord Tweedsmuir, which lost to R.A. McMath on Friday night.
Aislinn Konig had 31 points for the Bobcats and Louise Forsyth added 30 as the two provided 80 per cent of Brookswood’s scoring. The champs led 12-8 after the first quarter and 34-25 at the half.
The Bobcats had recorded amazing 90- and 48-point wins to open the 2016 Telus sa¹ú¼Ê´«Ã½ High School Basketball Championship at the Langley Events Centre. The latter came in a 76-28 semifinal victory over the Claremont Spartans on Thursday night.
Claremont bounced back from that loss with a 67-61 victory over Panorama Ridge on Friday and will play for fifth place against Riverside at 3 p.m. today. The Spartans were ranked No. 9 coming in, while Riverside — which downed Abbotsford 81-54 — was seeded No. 6.
In double-A consolation play, St. Michaels University School easily dumped J.L. Crowe 82-37. Ballenas lost 73-59 to Britannia and Pacific Christian played Okanagan Mission in the late game (score unavailable at press time).
