With the regular season now behind them, the Belmont Bulldogs and the Mount Douglas Rams look ahead to the sa国际传媒 Secondary Schools Football Association playoffs as the run to the Subway Bowl commences this weekend.
The 2-5 Bulldogs 鈥 who book-ended a 46-15 win over Carson Graham in their final regular-season outing last week to go with a season-opening triumph over Vancouver College 鈥 are on the road today at 5 p.m. to tackle the 5-2 Terry Fox Ravens.
Mount Douglas ventures to face Mt. Boucherie on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in a battle of 4-3 teams with the winner set to take on the No. 1 New Westminster Hyacks 鈥 who are a perfect 7-0 鈥 next weekend.
It is a very different Rams club with quarterback Gideone Kremler back at the helm.
Kremler led his troops back from a 28-7 deficit to down Seaquam 35-28 in their regular-season wrap-up last week.
鈥淢t. Boucherie is a well balanced team on both sides of the ball,鈥 said Rams head coach Mark Townsend. 鈥淭hey have an excellent running back in Jesse Benneke and I am very impressed with the play of Spencer Lindholm at his linebacker position.
鈥淔or us to be successful, we need to have a great week of preparation and focus and, come game time, we have to play our very best early in the contest and take care of the football.鈥
Last week, Kremler connected with twin brother Zairech Kremler on a nine-yard touchdown pass and added a 13-yard TD toss to Sebastian Hansen as part of his 312 yards through the air. Zairech also ran one score in from six yards out and Ben Pierik had two rushing majors.
Defensively, the Rams held off Seaquam to allow the offence to bounce back.
The Bulldogs were also stubborn defensively last week, finishing with four interceptions in their victory. Two came from Eli Nelms-Horton, who returned one for a touchdown.
鈥淭his conference is so strong top to bottom that any win is huge,鈥 Belmont head coach Alexis Sanschagrin said afterward. 鈥淭o end the regular season with a win, and entering the playoffs getting production from all our playmakers in the same game, is good for the confidence of the team.鈥
