The Maple Ridge Burrards must love those 10-9 Western Lacrosse Association scorelines.
They laid another one on the Victoria Shamrocks on Tuesday at Cam Neely Arena in Maple Ridge, following up a similar 10-9 score in a victory last Friday over the Shamrocks at The Q Centre.
The match-ups were a reprise of last year’s WLA final between the clubs, won by the Burrards in six games, en route to their first Mann Cup national championship berth in 26 years.
Maple Ridge leads this season’s series 2-1. Victoria won the first meeting between the clubs 12-10 on June 11 in Maple Ridge.
The Shamrocks fell to 6-3-1 on the season and the Burrards moved to 7-3.
Tuesday night’s affair had a playoff-like feel with the teams tied 8-8 after two periods. Like Friday at The Q Centre, when the Burrards outscored Victoria 5-1 in the third period, Maple Ridge again rallied for victory.
Corey Small put Victoria ahead 9-8 at 8:31 of the third period before goals by Ben McIntosh at 11:10 and Riley Loewen at 14:06 won it for Maple Ridge.
Jeff Cornwall, Luke Gillespie and McIntosh scored twice each for the Burrards. Small had three goals and two assists. Casey Jackson had two goals and three assists for Victoria, Josh Fagan three goals and an assist and Matt Hamilton one goal and an assist.
The Burrards needed only 13 saves from goaltender Frank Scigliano. Cody Hagedorn was much busier in the Victoria net in making 34 saves, while Adam Shute came in to make four more in a brief replacement stint.
