A foursome of major championship winners officially committed to the Pacific Links Championship, set for Sept. 19-25 at Bear Mountain Golf Resort.
Mark Calcavecchia, Jeff Sluman, Larry Mize and Bob Tway will all be in the field when the $2.5-million US PGA Tour Champions event, featuring the best senior players in the world, stops in the Victoria area.
Calcavecchia won 13 times on the PGA Tour, including the 1989 Open Championship at Royal Troon and the 1997 Greater Vancouver Open at Northview Golf & Country Club. He has added three more victories and 45 top-10 finishes on the Champions tour.
Sluman is best known for his 1988 PGA Championship victory, one of six wins on the PGA Tour. He鈥檚 also claimed six titles and $10 million on the Champions tour
Mize will forever be remembered for his chip-in on the 11th hole at Augusta National that defeated Greg Norman in the 1987 Masters sudden-death playoff. Mize had four PGA Tour wins and is also the 2010 Montreal Championship victor on the Champions tour.
Tway captured eight titles over his PGA Tour career including the PGA Championship in 1986, the season he claimed player of the year honours with four wins. Ironically, Tway also defeated Norman to earn his major victory, holing out from a bunker on the 72nd hole of that tournament.
The foursome has won a combined 41 times on the two tours and will bring their talents north to the Mountain Course in Langford.
Organizers of the local tournament are also reminding fans that The Pacific Links Championship is now accepting volunteer submissions for the event. To register as a volunteer, go to the tournament website at pacificlinkschampionship.com and click the Register Here button.
